Threshold tarot Joural no. 1|the moon, page of pentacles, ace of wands, six of swords
this is my threshold tarot practice, a series of intuitive card spreads I pull at the top of each month
to guide me over the transitions ahead.
an introduction
last month (september 2026), I began a practice of pulling four cards from my light seer’s tarot deck as a way to receive clarity about the month ahead. Each month, I’ll ask myself four guiding questions and pull a card in response to each of the following questions:
where to focus my energy this month?
what blocks my work this month?
what supports my success this month?
what is my space of infinite creative possibility?
I’d love to start sharing this practice right here on my blog. I’m calling this series my threshold tarot journal. Below are the cards I pulled this month and the initial feelings they brought up for me:
the moon - swimming in the darkness of the unknown
page of pentacles - a lack of grounding
ace of wands - the fire within
six of swords - the hard journey is the medicine
the moon - embracing that which you cannot see
the moon - the light seer’s tarot deck
this is the first card I drew for October. This is the card that answered the question regarding where to focus my energy this month. In the Light Seer’s deck, the moon card depicts a mystical mermaid floating at the bottom of the ocean. the figure levitates as if the water is carrying them. the bottom — that is the dark or the unknown — doesn’t appear as a heavy or scary environment. rather, the figure is held by this environment, held by the darkness of the unknown itself. and if you look closely (see above), they are not without light completely. The moon’s illumination penetrates the deep waters, softly lighting the figure’s way.
right now, I feel like I am yet again at a threshold. this has been a year of a lot of instability for me, both emotionally, physically, and materially. Instability has a way of evoking fear inside of me. I become obsessed with being able to know what comes next. this obsession, in turn, robs me of presence in my own life and turns the day to day existence into a miserable journey of constant anxiety and yearning for that which I don’t have.
the moon card feels like an invitation to make a safe environment out of the unknown, to begin a new relationship to faith. some of the card’s common reading notes include trusting intuition, grounding down into dreams, welcoming mystery, moving away from linear thinking and finding comfort in the darkness.
so much of fighting the unknown for me has also been wrapped up in needing to have a stable, material outcome that I can hold. but what if the darkness has a texture and a materiality that I can turn into a makeshift home? after all, my first home was the inside of my mother’s womb, a dark, watery place that was full of nourishment and potential. I’m hearing the moon card ask me if I don’t have the certainty of the sun’s brilliant light at my disposable, what groundwork can I build from under the moon’s faint yet powerful light?
page of pentacles - bringing hopes & plans down to earth
page of pentacles - the light seer’s tarot deck
this is the card I drew regarding the question of what blocks me for the month ahead. I think about this question as inquiry into what energy may feel difficult to work with or hold this month. in this card, there’s a figure at the center who is holding a mandala at their heart but their one foot lightly touches the earth below them. there’s a brief illusion of floating, but when you look again you can see that there is indeed contact with the earth.
I think this card is about balancing the airy energy of hopes and dreams and the “foot-on-earth” energy of bringing dreams into material form. this is such a perfect card to follow the moon because the moon is so much about the realm of water/dreams. I can hear the page of pentacles saying bring some of that water back up to the surface… In other words: what are you gonna do with all that water?
this card feels like some gentle course-correction. I often struggle with staying in the formlessness of the unknown. and staying in that place can activate the sense of instability I am already carrying. Instead, this card is giving me another way: begin shaping the unknown through the stability of the earth. I may not have all the answers about where my life is headed or if my dreams will come to fruition but I can slowly chip away at these dreams through practical routines, rituals, and daily acts of devotion, when the ocean (the unknown) feels like this huge, impenetrable force, the page of pentacles is encouraging me gather the resources I already have at my disposable. maybe there’s a floating piece of driftwood in the ocean I can hold onto or some pieces of an old boat I can turn into something useful. This is the time to tap into practical magic in order to move towards my desires.
ace of wands - what will you do with this fire?
ace of wands - the light seer’s tarot deck
when I queried the deck about what boosts or supports my success this month, the ace of wands showed up. a burning flame flickers at the middle of the depicted figure’s head. their eyes are closed as if to indicate that they are utterly consumed with the fire within. this is not a wild fire that rages with abandon. this fire is contained, intentional, a brightly lit candle within the spirit.
I started a lot of creative projects this year that I didn’t finish or didn’t return to. I struggled against my own creative energy needs. I went months without creating anything at all. and most of all, I doubted my ability to light my creative flame again. maybe I just don’t have anything worth sharing right now, I thought to myself.
the ace of wands feels like a fierce reminder of the flame that always remains lit within me, even when I am not actively creating (or I don’t think I am). this is a card that’s about seeding new ideas, the arrival of inspiration, intense bouts of creativity, and the ability to ignite your creative dreams. this card is also here to illuminate all the fires I’ve rejected or didn’t make use of. this card is here to tell me that I have all the energy and resources I need to bring my creations into the world.
this month, I’ve actually been overcome with a need to create. creation, for me, feels like release. when I’m not making, I’m letting too many old things pile up inside me. recently, I’ve been experimenting with creating one small thing each day as a way to practice devoted creative release. this blog entry is one of those small things.
six of swords - chasing hope / surrendering to your guides
six of swords - the light seer’s tarot deck
I really love this card. it’s one of the moodier ones in the deck. my favorite details? the bright red shawl contrasted against a desolate, ocean-green backdrop. the tiny pieces of string attached to the boat and the black birds who pull on the opposite ends with their mouths, as if steering the wooden vessel. this feels like a card that’s about being adrift, lost at sea. that’s why I thought it was strange that this was the deck’s response to my question about infinite creative possibilities for the month of october. but as I sat with this card, I thought about what being adrift really means. to be lost indicates that one is on an unfinished journey. the point from a to be is not clear. the space in between is the transition, the eye of the storm one must weather to get through to the other side.
but I feel myself losing the capacity for hope, losing the energy needed to believe that I will make this crossing safely. I find myself getting dragged back to the past, trying to pinpoint a single mistake I made or moment that could explain why I am here, in these unsteady waters. chris-anne, the creator of this deck writes:
“sometimes we find ourselves adrift because we think we are ready to move on, but our heart is still anchored to the past. what old chapter needs to be closed?”
I come back to the birds because they remind me that I don’t have the weather transitions alone. the swords, in tarot, are associated with the element of air. and in this card, the six birds (three in the front and three in the back) are the six of swords, the fierce wind (guides) that help steer the boat. maybe in drawing this card, I’m being reminded of the creative possibilities within turbulent transitions. they offer me the opportunity to lean on others. they require me to build a trust practice. they invite me to chase hope.
